Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy just the panels?
We do not currently offer stand-alone panels or unplanted panels for DIY installations. This is because plant selection and initial cultivation requires our expertise to ensure long-term plant health on our systems. We work with our customers to choose plants and support systems to meet their specific site specifications. We are expanding available choices and configurations as our site testing and installed base rapidly increases.
How much do the Wall systems cost?
Each system is designed for a particular locale. The price will vary based on the type and number of plants used, irrigation requirements, and framing specifications. For simple installs theses support systems costs do not represent a major fraction of overall price, however. A complete wall system typically runs less than what you would expect to pay for a similarly sized landscape fountain.
How much water do the panels use?
This will also depend on the installation siting and the plants used. Some systems consume less than a gallon a month. This is a result of our unique design which delivers the amount of water required by the plants and recycles the excess. Our system includes a reservoir which will be sized for service convenience and a margin of safety.
Where can we put the panels?
Site possibilities are nearly limitless. We can choose plants that grow in the sun, the shade or some combination of sun and shade. In addition, since our panels are ultra-light weight they may be attached to many types of structures without additional reinforcement typically required for heavier loads. By careful consideration of the reservoir design and installation we can extend the range of plant options via heat exchange with the irrigated panels. This is particularly important for western or southern exposure sites in our harsh Texas summers.
What are some of the benefits of green walls?
City centers around the country can be much hotter than surrounding areas. The lack of vegetation and the prevalence of heat absorbing surfaces results in higher temperatures. The sun transfers heat energy through the infra-red range of the spectrum. Plants use energy from the sun to produce food and heat energy is converted to chemical energy that plant made food with. Reducing the amount of heat energy will reduce the temperature.
Our panels will also act as a covering and reduce degradation of the walls they attached to.
They will also act as a layer of insulation if attached on a building.
Research shows plants can absorb the smallest particles in urban air pollution and act as an air filter. During the daylight hours plants convert CO2 into oxygen creating a better CO2/ Oxygen balance.
We are actively engaged research where our system could be utilized. Areas of interest include noise pollution dampening and urban storm runoff filtering.
How long does it take to have a VGS system delivered and installed?
For certified plant choices we require 12-20 weeks of cultivation time. Currently, we do not maintain an extensive inventory of pre-grown panels. Custom plant choices may take longer.
Installing the system is fast and simple. A site frame is constructed prior to panel delivery and the panels are attached in less than an hour.
Can old panels be changed easily for new panels?
Yes. This is an exciting advantage of our systems. The panels, the irrigation and drains are quickly uncoupled and new panel can be hung in minutes. We encourage rotation of different panels for seasonal variation or special events.
